Why Additive Manufacturing for Prototyping?
Additive manufacturing enables fast design iterations while significantly reducing time and cost during the engineering phase. It allows also reliable functional testing, helping to mitigate risks before committing to investment in production tooling.
Beyond engineering, it also very suitable for market testing and field trials and can serve as an effective marketing tool to present and sell a concept to your target audience.
What you should keep in mind..
Since Additive Manufacturing processes differs from conventional manufacturing, raw materials can vary and may exhibit slightly different properties. For polymers, this distinction is often reflected in the naming: ABS, for instance, is commonly referred to as ABS-like, and PEEK as PEEK-like. Elastomers for AM may differe even more, frequently carrying entirely different trade names such as Loctite IND475 or BASF Ultracur EL60.
However, raw materials for metal printing (i.e. SLM) generally retain the same properties as their conventionally manufactured counterparts. Aluminium (AlSi₁₀Mg) and titanium (Ti₆Al₄V) produced through additive manufacturing, for example, share the same material properties as the equivalent alloys used in milling or other more traditional processes.
